Welcome to the Maths Department at Medina High School.
We are fortunate to have moved into a new, purpose built maths and ICT facility in July 2007.
This consists of 7 maths classrooms and 3 ICT rooms all fully equipped with Promethean Interactive Whiteboards.
The maths department is staffed by 7 full time and 1 part-time teachers who are all maths specialists.

As a department, we are currently piloting the "BTEC in mathematical applications" in association with the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust.

INTRODUCTION

Mathematics is taught in all years at Medina with courses available to meet all needs and abilities.

We believe that as students develop their ability in applying new Mathematical skills they improve their levels of success in examinations.

Mathematics is taught as a core subject in Years 9, 10 and 11.

We have a thriving sixth form and offer Mathematics A level as well as Maths Studies, Maths Standard and Maths Higher to International Baccalureate Students in Years 12 and 13.

The Department offers various different courses and levels of examination and assessment.

Brief details of these are outlined in the following sections.






YEAR 9

Students are set on entry to the school on the basis of the information received from middle schools and follow a course appropriate to their knowledge and ability. Students who progress quickly may have their setting adjusted at any time during the year at the end of a particular piece of work.

All pupils will commence a 3 year GCSE mathematics course. There will be opportunites for pupils of middle ability to undertake the BTEC in maths applications alongside their GCSE studies and for gifted pupils to undertake advanced study.

The Department aims to match the course content to the individual ability of the student at all times and progress is closely monitored to ensure that this fit is as good as possible.

Students' progress is assessed at regular intervals throughout the year and setting may be adjusted as a result of these tests.
