Technology

Keystage 3 Design and Technology is part of the core curriculum of all Year 9 pupils at Medina High School. In Years 10 and 11 students are able to select one area of technology to study for GCSE.

All Programmes of Study are designed to encourage learning and promote self-confidence in a practical environment. Tasks are set that invite students to make decisions and put them into practice. In this way, students are encouraged to assume responsibility for their actions and to develop the quality of self-reliance.

The nature of the work provides pupils with the opportunity to increase their capability in solving problems and applying skills first encountered in other key areas of the curriculum.

Effective and appropriate use of Information Technology (IT) is positively promoted in all aspects of Design and Technology work. The Year 9 and GCSE courses provide continuity for middle school studies in this field and can be followed-up on post-16 courses, tested at AS and A2 levels.

In Year 9, pupils follow a Foundation Course in Design and Technology for the first two terms. The Foundation course serves to enable the establishment of safe working practices and the consolidation of prior learning. During this time students are encouraged to demonstrate their current subject strengths and extend their range of basic skills in line with GCSE syllabus requirements.

All students will engage in a rotation system allowing them to complete skill-based modules, including: Food, Textiles, Product Design and Resistant Materials.  In the final term of Year 9, students are able to select an area of Technology as a focus for their work. Keystage 4 In Year 10, pupils can opt to study one or more of the follow courses: Textiles, Product Design, Food , Resistant Materials and Child Development. Each subject has a coursework and exam component that leads to a GCSE qualification.

Technology at this level is stuctured through three main objectives: AO1 consists of materials, components, processes, techniques and industrial practices. AO2 combines designing and making into one objective. AO3 evaluation of processes and products includes examining the wider effects of design and technology on society.

NCFE Carpentry L1/2 & L2 Extended is a KS4 course which focuses on use of materials, craft techniques and the presentation of of a final product. Pupils are supported with key skills and there are also enhanced opportunties to gain work- related experience.
