Introduction

The underlying philosophy of the Learning Centre is to offer support, in a range of different ways, to students who have additional educational needs.  The support may range from one-to-one tuition to in-class support.  We can offer behaviour/welfare counselling and believe passionately in inclusive education.

Aims

The principle aim of the Learning Centre is to enable students to have equal access, expectations and treatment within a whole-school framework.

Other aims include developing a whole-school approach to identifying students with additional educational needs and arranging appropriate provision for them.

Objectives

1.        To meet the needs of all our students within the mainstream environment.

2.         To develop skills, expertise and confidence with individual subject tutors so that they may teach students more effectively.

3.         To enable students to develop and reach their full potential.

Provision and Liaison

Support provided by the Learning Centre for any one student can be reviewed as a continuum along which exists a variety of support strategies.  Any decision which affects a student on the SEN Register will only be made after consultation with parents, the student and any other relevant agency which has an interest at that time.

Monitoring Students

Students are monitored by a variety of means including previous histories from our partner middle schools, use of testing material/results, cause for concern slips, individual interviews and links with the pastoral system.

Members of the Learning Support Team liaise closely with middle schools during the Summer Term prior to starting at Medina High School. This is to enable a smooth transition into High School.

All students are invited for an informal visit with parents/guardians before the two day, Year 9 Induction Days (usual in early July).  This is to help build confidence and ensure that our new students can recognise a friendly face when they arrive.

Statemented Students

Close liaison with the Local Education Authority enables the delivery of the correct provision for our statemented students.

Liaison

Liaison takes place with parents, previous schools, advisory and support services, Connexions and the Learning Support Unit at the Isle of Wight College.
