Medina College is a large and thriving 11 – 19 college in the centre of Newport on the Isle of Wight. There are approximately 1300 students on roll with 270 of these based at our VI form campus, approximately 1.5 miles away in the centre of Newport. The VI form is shared with Carisbrooke College, our Federation partner.
There are extensive grounds and playing fields with the added benefit of the use of a professional leisure centre. The PE department makes excellent use of these facilities so students can participate in a wide range of activities from trampolining to swimming. As a designated Arts College, we are equipped with superb specialist facilities, including a fully functioning 420 seat community theatre, a ‘black box’ drama studio, a specialist dance studio and a professional recording studio. In addition, we have numerous Apple Mac suites for music technology, graphics and art.
Medina College continues its partnership with Solo (an IIT Trust partner) and annually hosts the Isle of Wight Festival. This provides a wide range of ‘money can’t buy’ opportunities and experiences for our students, such as set building, artist liaison duties and even performances for festival goers.
Over the last few years, we have extensively refurbished our technology block including the purpose built hair and beauty and carpentry studios. Our science department has also been fully refurbished with nine laboratories set up to deliver a highly practical and innovative curriculum. New facilities have also been built for geography, English and ICT, all of which incorporate the latest environmental friendly building technologies.
We are continuing to invest in the latest technologies to support students’ learning. All classrooms have access to IT and all are fitted with interactive whiteboards. There is a full wireless network throughout the College providing a Virtual Learning Environment. In many lessons, students have access to iPads to support the delivery of an innovative curriculum.
Students come to Medina from across the Island and we have close links with our feeder schools. We run a number of initiatives throughout the year to directly engage primary school children with subjects such as arts, sciences and technology; in particular we work with Year 5 and 6 children to prepare them for the transition to secondary school. One of our priorities is to strengthen the curricular, pastoral and extra-curricular links with our local primaries.
As a Specialist Arts College, Medina has outstanding arts facilities and offers a multitude of opportunities in this discipline. We have achieved the nationally recognized Artsmark Gold status and have been awarded the Leading Parent Partnership Award in recognition of our work with parents to achieve the best outcomes for young people.
