SCHOOL BUSES:

Is my child entitled to free transport?
Isle of Wight Council's policy for home-to-school transport for students starting secondary school means:

– If you live more than 3 miles from Medina College and it's your nearest secondary school by travelled route (ie road route, not straight-line distance), then your child is entitled to free home-to-school transport to Medina College.

– Or, if your child is receiving free school meals or you're on maximum tax credit, and you live between 2 and 6 miles away by travelled route, your child should be entitled to free home-to-school transport to Medina College.

If you're not sure whether you qualify, check with the School Admissions & Transport department at the Council. Let them know if there are any particular family circumstances they need to take into consideration. Email: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or tel: 01983 823455.

If you have older children who are already entitled to free transport to Medina College, they keep that entitlement until they finish Year 11.

What about buying a privilege seat on a school bus?
There are school buses to Medina College from many places on the Isle of Wight. See IW Council website for current routes:
https://www.iow.gov.uk/schoolbusroutes/Secondary/

If your child isn't entitled to free transport to Medina, they can apply for a "privilege seat" on a school bus – these are allocated if there is space. The cost from September 2018 is £130 per term (am-only or pm-only options available at £65 per term). The Council opens an "application window" during June to apply for a privilege seat. After the closing date, seats are allocated and you receive confirmation from the Council of whether your child has secured a spare seat by the end of July. There is information on privilege seats on the Council website:
https://www.iow.gov.uk/Residents/Schools-and-learning/School-Transport/Privilege-Seat-on-School-Transport

Term tickets for students allocated to a contracted school bus service will be available to collect from the school, college or educational institution on the first day of term. Therefore, on the first morning of the academic year, students who are eligible for a term ticket will be permitted to travel on the school bus without payment. However they must be wearing the appropriate uniform.

ACTIVE TRAVEL

Park and Stride
If you are dropping off or picking up students by car, consider the Park and Stride arrangement for nearby Seaclose Car Park (a 5-minute stride away from Medina College), to reduce congestion on the Medina site and encourage walking. The parking permit, which is valid until the end of the current school year, is available to parents from Medina College reception. See the school website for full details:

Cycling
We have secure bike storage at the school entrance for any students wishing to scoot or cycle to and from Medina College, and actively encourage this.
