It gives me great pleasure to write to you today to share the exciting new developments in regards to literacy intervention and the new Medina College Library.
Over the summer break the team has been working tirelessly to build, refurbish and stock the new library. Over 19,000 new books have been purchased and for the third year running we are using the Accelerated Reader programme (AR). We hope that the inspiring new environment, endless reading material and the rigour, structure and reward that the ARP brings the students at Medina College will give them an inspirational literacy experience when using the library.
All students in years 7, 8 and 9 follow the AR programme and have 1 hour timetabled reading lessons in which they have the opportunity to earn points towards reward trips, celebrating those students who have made progress. We can monitor the students' reading right down to the amount of words they have read.
So far, in years 7 and 8 we have read 243 books amounting to 1,855,888 words! Our highest achievers so far are Alfred Wall who has read 171,800 words and Courtney Stevens who has read 147,533. Congratulations! The individual quizzes assess the students' comprehension and understanding of the books they read.
If you would like more information about the AR programme please follow the link below.
We are formally opening the new Medina College Library in mid October and have a very special (and famous) guest coming to open it for us. Watch this space for the photos of some very excited students I'm sure!
As part of the new Medina College Library we have integrated our Fast Track Intervention team in to the space. This team is lead by Ms. Mudie and 4 part time teachers. They operate 1:1sessions, small group interventions and teach small classes for English and Mathematics. Students are supported in various ways and are selected from assessment data, KS2 results and teacher referral.
Finally, I would like to introduce Miss Thacker who teaches English at Medina. Miss Thacker takes a lead role on literacy across the entire curriculum, co-ordinates the AR programme and ensures that our literacy vision for all students is driven forward.
Keep an eye out for our evening opening hours for the library, which include a quiz night to raise money for even more new books!
