Global Rock Challenge

Wow! What day we had at Portsmouth Guildhall yesterday (Wednesday), performing in the Be Your Best Foundation, Rock Challenge 2016.

This is the first time that I have been on the other side of the ‘stage’ as a liaison teacher after taking part for many years as a student. I can honestly say that I have never felt prouder! Fifty-eight students from years 7-12 sleepily arrived at the ferry for the early 6am start. Within ten minutes, they were bouncing from the sheer excitement of the day ahead. During the day we are able to see all the other schools rehearse as well as perfect our own. Nerves were on high alert but after a very lively afternoon Production Meeting (involving a variety of air guitars and dance routines from all staff…on the stage!), the team were absolutely bursting at the seams to be made up head to toe makeup and endless cans of hairspray to keep the backcombing in place! I have never witnessed such phenomenal team work as I did last night. We were working in a relatively small room and the students were impeccable in every aspect. Just after 8pm, we were called to the holding area; I was lucky enough to be able to watch the performance in the main auditorium and from start to finish I was overwhelmed with pride, admiration and absolute delight! They were truly fantastic! We eagerly awaited the results and my fabulous Rock Challenge team scooped no less than three awards for Excellence:

  • Costuming Character: (integrated characterisation, authenticity, visual impact, appropriateness to theme, design function, integration with set, hair and makeup, use of colour and texture)
  • Entertainment: (enthusiasm, entertainment and enjoyment, audience engagement)
  • Video Performance: (clear and crisp video coverage, video direction from the school’s assistant, lighting used for visibility, detail of hair and makeup/costume design and performance of the school’s Video Director Assistant).

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the members of staff who have helped me in various ways to put together our entry; it simply wouldn’t have happened with them. Mr Furmidge, Miss Barnden, Mr Williams, Mrs Pye, Mrs Jones, Mrs Taylor, Mr Metcalfe, Mrs Dobinson and Mrs Dempsey – THANK YOU! You are all super stars!
