Duke of Edinburgh's Award

It’s time to get off the sofa. At Medina College we have a very active Duke of Edinburgh’s Award programme running throughout the year.

The DofE is all about going the extra mile – gaining new skills, pushing yourself physically, helping others and exploring new territories. At the same time, you’ll gather friendships, experiences and memories that will last a lifetime.

It doesn’t matter who you are or where you’re from, as long as you’re 14 to 24, you can choose the activities that motivate you and go on your own personal journey. We know from other participants that the DofE helps you stand out from the crowd when you apply for college, university or jobs. Ready to find out what the DofE could do for you?
A Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is so much more than a ‘pat on the back’ for completing a programme of activities. It is recognition of a young person’s successful journey of self-discovery and development. There are three progressive levels of DofE which, when successfully completed, lead to a Bronze, Silver or Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. With the help of DofE Leaders, participants select their own programme of activities and set themselves objectives. It’s not a competition or about being first. It’s all about self-development. There are four sections to complete: Volunteering; Physical; Skills and Expedition. At Gold level there is also a residential.

The next exciting step of your adventure is deciding what you are going to do as part of your DofE. There are so many different activities to choose from, just go to www.dofe.org/do-your-dofe/ section pages for more information, ideas and advice – you can also download some ideas lists and a handy planner for each section to help you identify the activity you want to do, who’s assessing you and what goals you’re setting for yourself.

There is a fantastic list of activities to choose from but, if you can’t find exactly what you want to do, have a chat to your Leader – most activities can count towards your DofE
To help you get started here’s a quick overview of what you’ll need to think about:

  • You decide: It is up to you to find an activity that you wish to do in your own personal time; maybe something you’re already doing or something you are interested in. Most of all pick something you’ll enjoy – it’ll make it easier to stick at it!
  • How much is the activity? It depends on what you are planning to do, some will be expensive, some will be cheap and some will be completely free – it is your choice on how much you want to spend on each activity.
  • Where can I do an activity? Find out whether this activity can be done in your local area. If it can’t, then it might involve you looking further away or searching for another activity. Part of the challenge of doing your DofE is finding a local opportunity.
  • How long do I have to do it? That depends on which level you are working towards and which section you are on.
  • Check the activity: Remember to check if what you are planning to do is permitted for the section. The DofE is very firm on what activities fall into which sections and they cannot be used for more than one section. Speak to your DofE Leader for further advice and an enrolment form – they may know what activities and opportunities are available locally.
  • The cost for the Award is £24.00 but there are grants to assist young people who are experiencing financial hardship.
  • Once everything is agreed and in place you’re ready to start your adventure. Have fun!
  • Your leaders at Medina are Mr. John Haynes, Mr. Ben Donald.
  • The DofE Manager is Mr. Alistair Bridle.
