Weekly Updates from the Headteacher

Welcome to the first update of the academic year, and a special welcome to our new year 7 parents/carers. I hope that you managed to enjoy some of the lovely weather we have had over the summer.

It has been fantastic to welcome all of our students back to school this week. Initially, we welcomed Year 7 and Year 11 on Wednesday and then all year groups yesterday. Each year group were part of a 'Welcome back' assembly , which set expectations for the year ahead. The students have all been excited and ready to learn and we are all very much looking forward to the new school year.

Year 11 parents/carers have been invited to a Parents' Evening next Wednesday, 10 September. This is a great opportunity to continue the important conversations about what is needed for your child to achieve their full potential during the year, what they need to focus on and where any gaps in learning are.

On Tuesday, Paul Clarkson attended an event at Exchange House in Newport to receive a £500 donation from the charity 'Wight Aid'.  The donation was made as a result of a bid to purchase fruit trees for the new Orchard Project which will aim to enable students to gain experience of the world of Horticulture.  We are very grateful for the contribution and the acknowledgement of our work by Wight Aid.

A reminder from our Canteen staff, students can use their 'meal deal' at break 1 or break 2, there are different offers available. Any student entitled to free school meals can also split their spending between break 1 and break 2. If your child has any questions or concerns about this please ask them to speak to a member of our friendly canteen staff.

Thank you for your support this week. It takes students different lengths of time to settle back into routines. If you do have any concerns, please contact their tutor in the first instance.

I wish you a great weekend.

Updates from The Pastoral Team

Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome back from the pastoral team!

It has been wonderful to see the students return this week. Their uniform and behaviour have been excellent, and we are looking forward to an amazing year ahead. There are some fantastic opportunities coming up, and we hope as many students as possible take part in them to make the most of their time at Medina. One of the first exciting events is the school production! Students can visit the drama room to find out more and collect an audition pack.

As you may be aware, many schools provide a planner or diary for students to log homework and serve as a home-school communication tool. This year, Medina has given every student a black Medina Notebook. All students are expected to have this with them every day. The notebook includes their timetable, and if a student needs to leave a lesson, the teacher will write in it. You can also use the notebook to write messages for your child's teacher or tutor.

We ask that students take care of their notebooks and bring them daily. If a notebook is lost, a replacement will need to be purchased; however, we have kept the cost low at £1.95. We expect students will value and use their notebooks, as we believe they are a great tool for communication and organisation.

We are pleased to share that we now have a new Pastoral Hub located next to the Library, where all Assistant Heads of Year are based. This space has been designed to offer students the best possible support. We have introduced an appointment system for each year group. If your child would like to speak with a member of the pastoral team, they can request an appointment through their tutor or by visiting the team before school or at break times. They may be seen straight away or scheduled for a longer, more private appointment later that day or the next. This system helps ensure the team can provide meaningful and effective support.

There have been some questions about toilet access. The unisex toilets are open during lesson time, though we encourage students to use the facilities at break and lunch wherever possible. If a student needs to use the toilet during a lesson, they should ask their teacher and get their notebook signed. Please note that this is at the teacher’s discretion. Additional toilets are available at break and lunch. Year 7 toilets are located on the way out of the metro towards the MUGA. Year 8, 9, 10, and 11 toilets are halfway down the metro on the way to the field.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your child’s tutor in the first instance.

Have a lovely weekend, and we look forward to seeing everyone again on Monday!

Warm regards,
The Pastoral Team
