Weekly Updates from the Leadership Team

Welcome to this week's update.

We would like to start by congratulating our Year 11 students on how mature they have been during the first few exams this week. We have our first whole cohort exam on Monday morning with the English Literature exam. Please remember that we have important information on our two website pages –  Year 11 Support  and Exams. If your child has any questions or concerns, please do encourage your child to speak to their tutor, the subject teacher or a member of our exams team.

This week we were lucky enough to have assemblies delivered by the RNLI. The work that they do, through lifeboat search and rescue, lifeguards, water safety education and flood rescue is invaluable and so important.  Given we are a small Island the chances of someone we know needing their support at some point in their lives is higher than in other areas of the country. Respecting the sea is a key to being able to enjoy using it.

Next week on 13 May we look forward to welcoming our Year 7 parent/carers into school for the rescheduled Parents' Evening. This will be a vital event to make sure that students have a successful end to the year and understand what has been going well and what could help to make things even better.

If you do not yet follow us on social media, please do find us on facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn or on our website as these will all keep you up to date with important messages, updates, our good news stories and upcoming events.

You may also have seen in recent media posts that there is a fantastic 50 years of 'Medina' event being planned for July. Please see the poster further down the newsletter for details.

Thank you to all parents/carers who have completed the Parent Voice survey sent out earlier this week. If you have not completed it yet, then please take a few moments over the weekend to do so as we will be closing it on Monday morning. The link has been sent in a letter via Arbor to your email address. Your voice is important to us.

With only a couple of weeks of this half-term left, please remind your child about our basic expectations in regard to respect of themselves, each other and our school environment. It takes all of us to play our own individual parts, for it to be the success we all want it to be. Our rewards shop continues to be popular, and we await with excitement our next set of deliveries of prizes!

We hope you have a lovely weekend and if you are taking part in any route of Walk the Wight this weekend – well done, we hope that it goes well!

Mrs Paul, Mrs Mursell and Mrs Sandiford

Executive Headteacher and Co-Heads of School

Mr Rock's 100 Challenge

Our Head of PE, Mr Rock, has successfully completed an extraordinary 100-mile endurance challenge, raising thousands of pounds and inspiring the entire Isle of Wight community in the process.

Mr Rock crossed the finish line last Friday afternoon after completing “Mr Rock’s 100” – a gruelling challenge which saw him walk 100 laps of a one-mile course around our school fields without sleep.

The challenge began at 4am on Thursday 30 April and continued throughout the night before finishing on Friday afternoon, cheered on by students and staff.

Mr Rock undertook the challenge to raise awareness and funds for the Huntington’s Disease Association, a cause that is deeply personal to him and his family. He lost his father to Huntington’s Disease, and both he and his brother have tested positive for the condition and are symptomatic.

Despite the physical and emotional demands of the challenge, he showed incredible resilience and determination throughout. During the early hours of Friday morning, at around 1am, he faced one of his toughest moments and seriously considered giving up. However, with the support of those around him and his unwavering commitment to the cause, he pushed through and continued on to complete the full 100 miles.

As part of the event, students from Medina College and other local primary and secondary schools joined Mr Rock for sections of the challenge, helping to raise awareness of Huntington’s Disease among young people across the Isle of Wight.

On Friday, our school community also held a non-uniform day in the charity’s pink and green colours before gathering together to welcome Mr Rock across the finish line.

Mr Rock's challenge has so far raised an incredible £5,500 for the Huntington’s Disease Association, through his Just Giving page and money raised by the school.

Everyone at Medina College is enormously proud of Mr. Rock’s achievement. His courage, positivity and determination have not only raised vital funds, but have also helped educate and inspire young people across the Island about Huntington’s Disease and the importance of resilience in the face of adversity.

Thank you to everyone in our community who supported the challenge through donations, walking with Mr Rock and sending kind words of encouragement. Thank you to Biltmore Printers for donating a fantastic custom 'Congratulations' banner to help us celebrate the finish line moment and, finally, thank you to the following schools who joined us during the challenge to walk, gained sponsorship money and even held their own separate fundraising events back in their own schools:

  • Cowes Enterprise College
  • The Bay Secondary School
  • Lift Ryde
  • Summerfields Primary School
  • Newchurch Primary School
  • Nettlestone Primary School
  • Gatten and Lake Primary School
  • Greenmount Primary School
  • Queensgate Primary School

Mental Health Awareness Week 2026

Next week, we will be celebrating Mental Health Awareness Week in school with a range of activities designed to promote positive wellbeing, encourage open conversations about mental health, and highlight the support available to our students.

Throughout the week, students will have the opportunity to take part in a variety of events and activities, including:

  • Daily assemblies focusing on supporting mental health, led by Mr Murdoch and our Wellbeing Ambassador students.
  • Daily wellbeing drop-ins with our Wellbeing Ambassadors during Break 1 in the Library. Students are welcome to pop in for a chat and support.
  • Mental Health Support Fair on Tuesday in the Library. Students will visit during the school day, and parents/carers are warmly invited to drop in between 3.15 pm and 4.30 pm. Professionals from the Youth Trust and the Isle of Wight Mental Health Support Team (MHST) will be available to offer support, guidance, and information about local services. Information about the support available through Kooth will also be provided.
  • On Thursday, all students will take part in a fun and engaging mental health quiz during Tutor Time.
  • Friday will be our “Go Green for Mental Health” mufti day, where students can wear their own clothes with a green theme to show support for mental health awareness. Green wristbands will also be available for students to collect and wear in school. We kindly ask for a £1 donation via Arbor, with all proceeds going to the MHST service, who provide invaluable support for our students in school.
  • A Wellbeing Walk will also take place on Friday during Break 2. All students are welcome to join us on the field to experience how exercise and spending time outdoors can positively support mental wellbeing.

At Medina College, one of our core values is kindness, and we hope this week will reinforce the importance of showing kindness not only to others, but also to ourselves. We are looking forward to an engaging and positive week that encourages students to look after their mental health, support one another, and continue building a caring and inclusive school community.

Noughts & Crosses Theatre Trip

On Wednesday, we took 13 GCSE Drama students to Mayflower Studios to watch Noughts & Crosses, the set text for their GCSE Drama exam. The students thoroughly enjoyed the experience and gained a great deal from seeing the production brought to life on stage.

We are extremely proud of how our students conducted themselves throughout the trip, both around Southampton and in the theatre. They were excellent ambassadors for the school and represented us brilliantly.

A huge thank you to Mrs Rogers, Mrs O’Callaghan and Mr Biddlecombe for supporting our students on this trip and helping to make the experience such a success.

Active Travel Campaign Presentation

We are delighted to celebrate our fantastic team of Active Travel Ambassadors - Evelyne, Johnny, Oliver, Tahlia, Violet, Orla-Rose and Emily-May who have won this year’s Active Travel competition. The students worked hard over recent weeks to promote safer, healthier and more sustainable ways of travelling to school.

As part of the final competition event, held at Medina Theatre on 30 April, the students delivered an impressive presentation in front of a panel of respected judges including the Isle of Wight High Sheriff, the Managing Director of Southern Vectis and the Director of Modeshift. They confidently shared their ideas in promoting active and sustainable travel and answered on the spot questions with confidence. Their creativity, teamwork and enthusiasm shone throughout, and they represented our school brilliantly.

The students' campaign is to promote cycling to school for both students and staff. The judges decided that their campaign was well researched and delivered and awarded them first place and £500 towards delivering their campaign in school.

The next step will be for the students to meet with Mrs Mursell and Mrs Sandiford to discuss and plan how the grant money will be spent to further support active travel within our school community.

A huge thank you and congratulations to all of the students involved for their fantastic effort and enthusiasm. We would also like to give special thanks to Mrs O’Callaghan, Miss Long and Mrs Rogers for stepping in to support the students with this wonderful opportunity.

Isle of Wight Secondary Schools Rugby tournament

Last week, our Year 9 boys took part in the Isle of Wight secondary schools rugby tournament, hosted here at Medina.  Joining forces with Lift Ryde, the team faced Christ the King College’s 1st team in a fiercely contested match, coming away with a hard-fought victory by a single try. The standout moment has to be Mason’s brilliant solo try early in the game.

In the second and deciding match, The Island Free School proved tough opposition. Despite the result, our boys showed real grit with some excellent tackling and strong work at the ruck throughout.

A great effort all round - well played, lads!

Music Composition Workshop

Last week we were delighted to welcome composer James Redwood to the school. James worked with our Year 10 GCSE Music students, along with selected musicians from Years 8 and 9. During the visit, he workshopped a song written by students from across the Island about life on the Isle of Wight.

The students will continue to take part in further composition workshops, culminating in a performance as part of the School Takeover event in October, in collaboration with Creative Island and Ventnor Exchange.

Students responded very positively to feedback and successfully developed a chord progression and melody line in preparation for their next session.

Annual Island Schools Athletics Championships

On Wednesday, we took our Year 7 and 8 team to the annual Island Schools Athletics Championships. This is a great opportunity for our students to experience going to other places and trying events they have less knowledge of. The students were a real credit to Medina as they took on some highly experienced athletes from the other schools but kept on trying their best throughout the afternoon! Well done to the team of Chris, Khaleel, Matt, Theo, Molly, Victoria, Florence, Violet, Evie, Emmie, Arthur, Alfie, George, Corey, Erynn, Polly, Sadie, Hollie and Immy.

A special mention to George who won the silver medal in the year 8 boys 800m. He set off at an incredible pace and had created a 20m lead at the end of the first lap. He was able to keep all but one of the other runners behind him for a really gutsy performance!

Well done George!

Island Schools Athletics Championships

After the success of our year 7-8 team on Wednesday, on Thursday, we took our year 9-10 team over to The Bay for the senior round of the athletics championships. The slightly warmer weather helped our students to really raise their game! After winning only a single medal the day before, this team was motivated to go for medals and they delivered. Megan ran a great race in the 800m and took silver against a high-class opponent. Jaiden also ran well in the 1500m, showing good tactical running to also take silver. Jaz had a great long jump competition, winning a well deserved bronze. Callum ran one of the best 200m finals I've seen, to take gold! In the final event of the day, the year 10 boys team missed out on gold in a very tight finish to claim silver! It was another great afternoon and all of our students made us proud! Well done to Mason, Alfie, Caleb, Theo, Archie, Megan, Paige, Indy, Roxy, Mitchell, Zuheb, Jaiden, Callum, Jimi, Hamish, Zoe, Eloise, Flossie, Jaz, Immogen, Amelie and Sophie.
