Weekly Updates from the Leadership Team

Thank you for your support in what has been an unusual week. We appreciate that there are always mixed feelings when it comes to looking at and reviewing whether certain decisions should be made. We do not take opening the school in excessive heat, which we did on Wednesday, or closing it to support the welfare of the students and staff, lightly. Our main priority on any given day is the welfare of our students and staff. We hope that you understand why the decisions were taken. The option for students to still come into school supported any families needing/wanting this, and it was also lovely to hear that the students who came to school yesterday wanted to be here. There has been disruption to calendar events and for this we apologise. Year 10 trial exam will continue as normal on Monday, and we will be rescheduling the two days that have been missed. One will be Friday, 3 July, as Year 10 have their Taster Day at our VI Form, The Island VI Form, on Thursday, 2 July. Additionally, the Year 7 Geography trip will also be rearranged for later in July.

Year 10 parents/carers – thank you for your support with the Year 10 Work Experience process so far. If your child has not yet completed their Unifrog details for their placement, then please encourage them to do this as soon as possible. Any students who are not taking part in Work Experience, will be expected to be in school.

We are very much looking forward to welcoming our new Year 6 into 7 students into school on Tuesday, 7 July. Having our new Medina cohort joining our Medina family is very exciting, and we have some plans developing to maximise the success of their transition.

As we look to next week, please ensure that your child comes to school with sun cream on and a water bottle that they can refill during the day. As it stands we will be returning to full school uniform on Monday. If this changes, we will notify you on Sunday.

We hope you have a lovely weekend.

An Incredible Performance at The Isle of Wight Festival!

Opening a stage at the Isle of Wight Festival is an experience many performers only dream of...

Students from Years 8, 9 and 10 had the amazing opportunity to open the Kids Zone Stage on Saturday at the Isle of Wight Festival!

Performing in front of a festival crowd takes courage, and our students rose to the challenge with outstanding professionalism, enthusiasm and resilience. For many, this was well outside their comfort zone, yet they embraced the experience and delivered fantastic performances that made themselves, their families, Mr Winsor and our whole school incredibly proud.

Opportunities like this help build confidence, develop performance skills and create memories that will last a lifetime. We couldn't be prouder of every student who took part.

A huge thank you to Department Ryde and Shademakers for providing such a fantastic opportunity. We are already looking forward to returning next year!

Year 9 / 10 Cricket

The Year 9/10 Cricket Team produced an excellent performance this week in their fixture against The Bay.
Batting first, The Bay posted a strong total of 92 for 1 from their 12 overs. Medina's bowling attack worked hard throughout, with Samuel, Ollie, Logan and Zuheb all impressing. Zuheb claimed the team's only wicket of the innings.

In reply, Medina's opening partnership of Owen and Archie got the chase off to a flying start, playing positively and finding the boundary regularly. Owen retired after an excellent innings, while Archie remained unbeaten on 29 and sealed victory in style with a huge six, guiding Medina home with eight balls to spare. Drew and Dylan also contributed valuable runs during their time at the crease.

Well done to both teams on an entertaining game of cricket!

Balancing the Equation Maths Trip Wednesday 17th June 2026

Last week a group of year 10 girls attended a Maths event called Balancing the Equation, run by the Advanced Mathematics Support Programme, at Portsmouth University. The day was designed to develop students’ problem-solving and teamwork skills while encouraging more female students to pursue maths post-16.

During the day, students collaborated in small groups on extended mathematical problems. Our students rose to the challenge, collaborating with girls from other schools, to solve problems based on areas of maths they had not necessarily been taught before. They demonstrated resilience and perseverance. There was also an opportunity to quiz university students about their choices and experiences of maths, which gave our students a chance to consider the different pathways Maths could take them.

The event also included short talks from young women who use maths in their careers. A University of Portsmouth researcher shared how her experiences of maths had taken her all over the world, providing the opportunity to work in many different countries, with her current research being based around increasing the battery life for electric cars. There was a very entertaining talk from Dominique, from Sums of Anarchy, who spoke passionately about how Maths and the Arts can be combined.

Throughout the day, our students displayed great curiosity and maturity and were a credit to Medina College.

BAE International Women in Engineering Day 2026

On Thursday 18th June, thirteen Year 9 girls attended the BAE International Women in Engineering Day event at Portsmouth Guildhall. The day provided an excellent opportunity for students to explore the exciting world of engineering and discover the wide range of career pathways available within the industry.

Throughout the event, students took part in a variety of interactive workshops designed to test and develop the key skills required for success in engineering. Activities challenged their problem solving, teamwork, communication and creative thinking abilities, while giving them hands-on experience of real world engineering tasks.

The students engaged enthusiastically with the challenges and had the opportunity to meet inspiring female engineers who shared their experiences and career journeys. The event highlighted the important role women play in engineering and encouraged students to consider STEM subjects and future careers in this innovative and rapidly growing sector.

The trip was both enjoyable and inspiring, and our students represented the school exceptionally well. We hope the experience has motivated many of them to continue exploring opportunities in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
