Weekly Updates from the Headteacher

Year 11 exams start in earnest this week, with the first whole-year exam on Monday morning, which will be English Literature. After this exam we will be taking the Year 11 group photograph - so please make sure your child attends school in full school uniform. Year 11 will also have breakfast available to them if they have a morning exam, from 8am throughout the exam season. Further to my letter to you at the end of last week, if after half term your child has a morning and afternoon exam, then we will have supervised revision provision on the school site, so the expectation is that those students stay on site - the canteen will be available to them at lunchtime. We will be writing to you about May half term revision offers over the next couple of weeks.

Next week is Mental Health Awareness Week and we will be talking to pupils in assemblies about how we can build a kind and caring community that supports everyone.

Our free breakfast club is running successfully and is available for all students every morning during term time between 8.15am and 8.35am - bagels and a selection of spreads and juice is available.

We have had a busy week of sport this week, with Year 11 badminton finals in Hampshire, as well as an athletics event with representatives from Year 7 through to Year 10. Thank you to all students and staff who take part, organise and support these events.

Year 7 Parents, we have a Parents' Evening on Wednesday 11 June, so you will be receiving invites to attend this before we break for half term. There are subject assessments running in the week before half term for Year 7 and 8.

If you are taking part in any of the Walk the Wight activities on Sunday, I hope it goes well. Everyone is raising money for a great local cause. The weather is looking favourable for you at the moment!

Huge congratulations to the Wight Eagles Academy FC U15 team on their victory last weekend, seeing them crowned champions of Hampshire Girls Division 2.

Eight of our Year 9/10 students play for this team and we are all really proud of their success! ⚽️🎉

On Tuesday 6 May, the Year 11 boys badminton squad were representing the IOW at the Hampshire badminton finals after winning the IOW championships. The boys have been really committed to after-school badminton club throughout their time at Medina and their badminton skills have improved so much since they started in Year 7. It was great to see them showcasing them on the Hampshire stage.

They performed admirably throughout the tournament against some of the best players in Hampshire. Medina 1 ended up coming 5th but were very unlucky not to make the semi-finals after only losing to the eventual winners during the whole tournament. Medina 2 came 10th and had some excellent games and grew into the tournament. Well played lads from a very proud PE teacher - Mr Dye

On Wednesday 7 May, we took a small select team of athletes from Years 7 and 8 to Sandown for the Island Schools Junior Athletics Championships 2025. All students shone and we saw some amazing performances.

Congratulations to Megan - 2nd in 1500m and 4th in 200m, Austin - 3rd in 150m, and Caleb who missed out on the bronze medal in the 200m by just a couple of cm. It was a great afternoon representing Team Medina.

As a community, we observed a two-minute silence at midday yesterday to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day.

VE Day 80 is a celebration of 80 years of peace since the end of World War Two in Europe. It is not only a tribute to those who fought for the freedom we all enjoy today, but also a powerful reminder of the resilience and unity that have defined our country ever since.

We would like to share a link to The British Army's Twitch channel where they have provided a 40 minute VE Day 80 history lesson: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/2453342996?tt_content=vod&tt_medium=mobile_web_share This link will be live for 1 week and may be of interest to both parents and students.

Walk the Wight - Sunday 11 May

Good luck to everyone taking part in Walk the Wight this Sunday!

We would like to include a montage of photos of our community taking part in this event in our weekly news updates and on our social media channels.

If your child is taking part (over any of the distance options) and is happy to be included, please send a photo of them somewhere along the route to gemma.long@iow.hispmat.org by the end of Monday 12 May.
