Weekly Updates from the Headteacher

I would like to begin by saying how wonderful it was to welcome our prospective Year 6 into Year 7 students, along with their parents and carers, to Medina College on Tuesday evening. It was a real privilege to show them what #WeAreMedina truly means.

I had the pleasure of leading an interactive session in the Theatre, where students could win prizes by remembering key numbers linked to facts about our college. Following this, five of our fantastic students from Years 8 and 11 spoke to the audience about their experiences of school life. Their confidence and eloquence in public speaking were truly admirable, and I felt proud to share the stage with them.

Across the school, visitors were able to take part in a wide range of curriculum activities, with particular favourites being the parkour and trampoline demonstrations in the Sports Hall. Well done to everyone who completed their subject sticker passports! A special thank you also goes to our School Pastors for their support throughout the evening.

Looking ahead, I would like to remind our older students to save the date: Thursday 13 November is our Open Evening at The Island VI Form.

This week, our Year 7 students also enjoyed a fantastic team-building day. Thank you to Mr Winsor and his team for creating such an exciting, interactive programme where students had the opportunity to collaborate and live out our value of 'Together'.

Year 11 parents and carers will shortly receive a letter regarding the upcoming trial exams after half term. It is essential that Year 11 students make the most of every opportunity and begin developing strong study habits now.

Finally, I want to praise our students for their mature and sensible response to this week’s lockdown practice. They were a credit to themselves and to our whole learning community.

Wishing you all a restful and enjoyable weekend.

Boys Football Roundup

The Year 8 boys had the first fixture of the year, hosting Ryde Academy on the top pitch at Medina. It was an entertaining game and some of the lads’ first 11 aside match. They lost 5-2, but captain Max scored a great long-range free kick and Connor finished off after good work down the left by Owen.

The Year 10 team (pictured) played against a strong Ryde Academy side. They dug in and put in a fantastic shift but eventually lost 4-0. They worked really hard for each other and there were some excellent moments in the match. Saves from Austin in the first half and Mayson on debut in the second half. Owen was denied on 3 occasions by the Ryde goalie after some jinking runs and Callum's goal-bound shot was also palmed away after cutting in from the left. Well done to them all.

The Year 9 boys put in a superb performance away to Ryde Academy at Pell Lane, winning 6-3. Goals came from Lucas x3 Ollie x1 and Sam x1. Great start! Well done lads.

A request from the Technology Department

We would be really grateful for any small, non-working electrical items such as computer mice, games controllers, phones (landline or mobile), hairdryers, straighteners, remote controls, handheld vacuums etc for the Technology Department. This is so students can do a deconstruction project looking at the assembly of components, repair-ability and number of non-recyclable materials in products. Please send any donations in to Reception. Many thanks.
