Weekly Updates from the Headteacher

Welcome to the final update for this half term and the final update from me as Headteacher at Medina College.

I would like to start by saying that it has been a privilege to work with the students and alongside the staff for the last 10 months. Medina College is a passionate learning community, with a huge amount to offer. It is really important that the whole immediate community, which includes the students, the staff and the parents/carers continue to work together. The community is stronger this way.

Yesterday evening our new Year 7s had the opportunity to enjoy a welcome/end of half term 'Spooky Disco'. Some of the costumes were amazing and had obviously taken much planning. The students all had a good time and were a credit to themselves. Thank you to the team of staff, particularly Mr Winsor and Ms Rogers for organising it.

On Tuesday our Year 11 students took part in an Island Futures event, which was being held in the Sports Hall. This provided them with valuable information about their future options and opportunities, allowing them to ask questions and think about their personal journey ahead. It also reminded students of how important their exams in the summer are, and we would like all students to use the trial exam when they come back after half term to really ensure they focus on the next six months, which will fly by.

Additionally, we welcomed the police into assemblies to deliver sessions on prejudicial language and discrimination this week. These are such important topics and ones that will be revisited again in the future.

Thank you for all of your support and I wish the Medina College community the very best in the future.

Please remember that the students return to school on Tuesday 4 November as Monday 3 is a staff development day.

Attendance Update

Firstly, a huge well done to our students for successfully completing their first half term of this academic year. It has been an exciting start to the year, and the approach to attending school has been positive. Thanks to all parents and carers for being supportive in helping us work together to increase school attendance and maximise learning potential.

As you know, cold and flu season is fast approaching, and it is important to recognise the impact this can have on school attendance; please encourage your child to maintain high levels of personal hygiene and be proactive in minimising the spread of cold and flu.

  1. Effective handwashing is essential in combating the spread - wash hands before mealtimes and after using the toilet with warm water and soap. Hand sanitisers are useful in reducing the risk of infection.
  2. Use tissues to catch a sneeze and bin used tissues as quickly as possible.

Attendance streaks will be in place from after half term. Students will be encouraged to gain as many 5-day Monday to Friday streaks as they can to be entered into a draw to win prizes. In addition to this, larger prizes will be available for the biggest streaks. The more 5 day streaks your child accumulates, the more entries they earn to win prizes. Streaks will be logged during tutor time and significant milestones will be celebrated in assembly. Please encourage your child to start strong by attending school on time to maintain their streak.

Please continue to keep the attendance team updated if your child is unwell. Please use Arbor to report absences, and if you have any questions please contact via email: attendance@medina.iow.sch.uk. Have a restful half term, and we look forward to seeing all our students back on Tuesday 4 November.

Girls' Football News

U16 Hampshire Cup

On Friday 10 October, the U16 girls’ football team were in action against a mainland team. We were missing some key players due to injuries, however, it was end to end action with both teams putting in solid competitive performances. Despite robust defending we found ourselves 1-0 at half time. The girls collected themselves and set out to score in the second half. There were a couple of near misses that almost levelled the score but eventually in the last few minutes of the game our fate was sealed by a second goal from Calthorpe.

The whole Medina team absolutely gave it their all and should come away really pleased with their performance. It wasn't the score we wanted, but nobody could have tried harder.

Another really pleasant evening of school sport.

Team: Eloise, Poppy, Lyla, Emilia, Jasmine, Phoebe, Aaleeya, Mylea, Daisy, Demi, Imogen, Alexia and Amelia F (assistant coach)

U13 Girls' Football

On Tuesday, the Year 7 and 8 girls had their second league game at home against a strong Christ the King College team. We battled hard and gave it our all but sadly we couldn't match the opposition. The resilience shown by our team was outstanding. We never gave up and the second half was a much more balanced affair.

Player of the match goes to Florence for her awesome efforts in goal.

Special thanks to Amelia for Reffing.

Great work ladies.

Year 11 Girls’ Netball Tournament

On Thursday 9 October, the Year 11 girls attended the annual Island schools’ netball tournament. We had some mixed results against some incredibly well-drilled teams. The girls literally played their socks off all evening and had such an amazing team spirit. There was great shooting and passing in all the matches and a really high intensity to their game play.

This is such a fun team to be around and they are fantastic ambassadors for Medina College.

Team: Mylea, Lucy, Sonya, Daisy, Zee, Amiee, Amber and Earlisa

Well done ladies.

Boys' Football News

The Year 8 boys had a great performance against Christ the King. They played some free flowing football and scored some superb goals.

Goals were scored by:
Alfie x3
Max x1
Austin x1
Connor x1
Oscar x1

The Year 9 boys had a home match v Ryde School last Thursday afternoon.
In a topsy turvy affair with some well taken goals by both teams Ryde School took the win 5-3.

Medina goal scorers were:
Lucas x1
Caleb x1
Dylan x1

The Year 10 boys hosted The Bay on Tuesday afternoon. The first half was a tight affair with the woodwork being hit by both teams. The Bay, however, broke the deadlock just before half time to lead 1-0. The Medina players really put a shift in all around the park and were unlucky not to find the back of the net when the crossbar was struck again! The Bay managed to seal the win with 2 late goals to finish the game 3-0. However, Medina showed real improvement from the week before which was great to see. Well done lads.

Request for Football Boots Donations

If you have any spare football boots at home that you can donate to our PE department, we would be ever so grateful. Many students borrow boots in the winter months and our stock is currently low. Please send any donations in to Reception. Many thanks.
