Weekly Updates from the Leadership Team

Welcome to the end of the third week of term.

Yesterday and today Years 7 - 10 have been lucky enough to receive free workshops from Kooth. As you will have hopefully seen, Kooth is a FREE safe and anonymous website that children and young people aged 11-25 years old In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight can access to support their mental health and well being. As well as self help resources and community support, access to fully qualified counsellors until 10pm each night is available too.

Year 10 core trial exams are in the mornings next week from Monday to Wednesday. Students received information in assembly yesterday and today. A letter was sent to parents/carers earlier today regarding expectations. Year 11 students will receive an assembly before the end of this half term and parents/carers will also receive a letter regarding expectations and support available on the run up to the trial exams.

Year 9 Parents/carers have been invited to Parents' Evening on Wednesday, 28 January. If you have not yet signed up please do so, as it is important to get feedback about subjects ahead of the KS4 Pathways process starting.

We have some real good news stories covered in the newsletter below, so please do take some time to read about what the students have been enjoying.

The focus value this week has been Courage, next week we will be focusing on Kindness again.

We hope you have a lovely weekend

Executive Headteacher and Co-Heads of School

GKN Assembly- Apprenticeships

Friday's Year 11 assembly delivered by representatives from GKN was extremely successful and very well received by students. The session focused on apprenticeship pathways and post-16 options; providing clear, relevant information about routes into employment alongside training. Engagement was high throughout,  with students asking thoughtful questions and showing strong interest in the opportunities presented. There have been follow-up drop-in sessions held this week, which were attended by those seeking more detailed discussions about post-16 pathways and apprenticeship routes. The visit supported students' decision-making and raised awareness of alternative progression routes beyond sixth form and college.

Kindness Workshops led by Kooth

Students in Years 7–10 were fortunate this week to take part in workshops led by Carly Seymour, Engagement Lead at Kooth, an organisation dedicated to supporting young people’s mental health and wellbeing.

The workshops focused on the benefits of kindness and how bringing more kindness into our daily lives can have profound positive effects, not only for ourselves, but for those around us.

Carly shared the science behind kindness, explaining that:

  • Kindness releases “feel-good” brain chemicals such as serotonin and dopamine, which boost happiness and improve mood

  • Kindness can lower blood pressure, helping to reduce stress

  • Kindness supports positive changes in the brain, increasing resilience and compassion

Students also explored practical ways to bring more kindness into their lives. Simple actions, such as smiling, were highlighted - kindness really is infectious! Other examples included offering help at home, volunteering in the community, and being kinder to ourselves.

All students left the workshop with a card explaining how to access Kooth should they ever feel worried, low, or simply need someone to listen. Carly was also available in the Student Hub at break times to speak to students directly.

Kooth is a FREE, safe and anonymous online service that children and young people aged 11–25 in Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight can access for mental health and wellbeing support. Alongside self-help resources and community forums, fully qualified counsellors are available online until 10pm each evening. Visit kooth.com for full details.

We are incredibly grateful to Carly for supporting our students and for reinforcing one of Medina College’s core values: Together we succeed with Kindness.

KS4 Badminton tournament report

The KS4 badminton teams represented Medina at the Island secondary schools tournament on Wednesday at CTK. The Girls team played really well throughout the tournament but with some narrow 1 point losses unfortunately didn't make it through to finals day. It was great to see their badminton skills and confidence grow throughout and some of the doubles rallies were very entertaining.

The Boys teams worked hard and gave their best with Peter winning his 1st singles match. However, they were against some strong players and pairings so didn't make it through but the experience of playing matches against different people in a competitive setting definitely benefited their badminton development.

A big thank you to Miss Glasbey from CTK who organised the tournament.

I am looking to arrange some more badminton fixtures for this group as it was great to see them having fun playing but also socialising with other students from different schools.

Well done!

Badminton Success

The KS3 boys badminton teams represented Medina College at the IW badminton qualifiers on Tuesday afternoon. The A team, consisting of Sam, Dylan, Drew and Archie played some excellent games, winning 4 out of their matches finishing second, therefore qualifying for the finals next week.

Player of the day was Drew finishing unbeaten winning all of his matches!

The B team didn't manage to qualify but did perform well with Alfie, Caleb and Mason all winning matches throughout the tournament.

Well played lads!

Our Sports Leaders

On Wednesday, our incredible Sports Leaders were back in action, this time helping to run the Island Primary School's Athletics Final here at Medina College. This week's group continued the amazing work of our previous groups and represented us outstandingly.

Well done to Evie, Brooke, Seth, Theo, Dylan, Amelie, Zoe, Isobelle, Naomi, Jaiden, Demi and Eloise.

Indoor cricket tournament

On Thursday Medina hosted the Indoor U13 cricket tournament.

In our first game we started well with Poppy L leading the way as Captain with her cricket experience. We soon got into the swing of things with some great batting and excellent bowling. For a first game together, we gelled very quickly.

Our second game against Lift Ryde was also great and we built upon the successes in the first game. Batting became more exciting with more runs scored and better communication.

Our last and final game was against a super strong Island free school team. The score didn't reflect how our girls played.

Special mention should go to Florence who was outstanding as our wicket keeper and Tia who took some great catches. All the girls were a credit to the school.

There will be more cricket to come in the summer. Well done girls
