Weekly Updates from the Leadership Team

We have reached the end of another half-term. Thank you for your ongoing support for us and your children.

This week, assemblies have been delivered by the Isle of Wight Neurodiversity Team from the Local Authority. They are a team of practitioners who support children and young people along with their families, professionals, teachers and anyone else who is interested in developing their understanding of neurodivergence. They educate and advise on everything that is associated with neurodivergence, including things like sleep, mental health, wellbeing, and education. They explained how particularly important sleep is, and the challenges that we face as individuals if we don't get enough. Additionally, covering information about sugar and caffeine in drinks that have become very popular, and explaining why children should not drink energy drinks.

Thank you to all Year 11 parents/carers who attended Parents' Evening this week. We hope that you found it useful. You will have received a letter earlier today regarding the trial exams after half-term. Please do take some time to read it so you can also reinforce the messages with your child. It also included details of revision sessions that are being offered over half-term.

Thank you to the parents/carers who took part in the recent mobile phone consultation meetings. We will be sending further details to all parents/carers over the next half-term about future plans.

This week we had the privilege of welcoming the Apprenticeship Roadshow to  meet our Year 11 students. It is vital to show our students what the future may look like for them, supporting them to focus on the current part of the education journey.

Year 9 parents/carers will have received a letter from us regarding the KS4 Pathways process, which has started with assemblies and is now at the point of students expressing an interest to help us understand which subjects are popular and what we can offer, staff, and timetable in September. Please take some time to read the letter, talk to your child and complete the google form link in the letter.

Please remember that it is half-term next week, and Monday 23 February is Development Day, so we look forward to welcoming students back to school on Tuesday 24 February, refreshed, on time, in the correct uniform and ready to learn.

Year 9 Pathways

Year 9 students have now attended all the subject assemblies regarding the Pathways process, giving them information as to the courses that are available in Years 10 and 11.  The next step is for all Year 9 students to complete an expression of interest google form.  This is not to select their final course choices, but to allow us to create the pathway blocking form that will suit as many of the year group as possible.  A letter with further information has been sent to all Year 9 parents with the link; it is also available through Google Classroom.

The Year 9 Pathways evening will take place on Wednesday 4 March from 5pm until 7pm.  This is a very important evening for both parents and children, and we look forward to seeing as many of you as possible.

Year 10 Drama Workshop at Department, Ryde

Year 10 students recently enjoyed an inspiring and engaging trip to Department in Ryde, where they took part in an exciting experience during Creative Careers Week.

The visit began with a guided tour of the venue, giving students an insight into how Department operates as a creative and community space. They learnt about the wide range of roles involved in running events and exhibitions, from marketing and event planning to technical production and design. It was a fantastic opportunity to see first-hand the variety of career pathways available within the creative industries.

Students were also able to explore the current exhibition of vibrant carnival masks. The colourful, larger-than-life costumes made a big impression. The exhibition sparked discussion about culture, design, and the creative process, and students were fascinated by the detail and craftsmanship behind each piece.

The highlight of the day was a hands-on workshop challenge. Working in teams, students were given a specific venue, an audience demographic and size, and a set budget. Their task was to design an event concept that linked to the town of Ryde. They then developed their ideas and pitched them back to the group, just as they would in a real-world professional setting.

We were incredibly proud of the creativity, teamwork, and confidence our students demonstrated. Their ideas ranged from community festivals and live music events to interactive exhibitions celebrating Ryde’s history and seaside heritage. The quality of the pitches was outstanding, with students carefully considering budgeting, marketing, and audience engagement.

Students were full of praise for the experience. Comments included, “We had so much fun,” and “The experience was 10/10 – they went above and beyond.” Another student shared, “It was really fun and confidence boosting,” while one reflected on the careers insight gained: “I learnt about so many different career options that are available in drama that aren’t just being on stage.” Many students said they would love to return, with one adding, “I would 100% go again if I got the opportunity.”

It was a valuable and memorable visit that helped students develop important skills in communication, problem-solving, and enterprise, while broadening their understanding of careers within the creative and performing arts industries. We would like to thank the team at Department for providing such a meaningful and inspiring opportunity and to the team at Creative Island for their organisation of the experience.

Medina Black Books

We have noticed a significant decline in students being equipped for their day and this includes having their Medina Black Book (notebook) with them. This book is part of the student's daily equipment and is needed to help keep students organised. Timetables, toilet log, passes, detention and tutor notes are issued through this book, and without them, students are not as prepared for their day as they should be.

Every student was issued a notebook in September, and if it has been lost or misplaced, it will need to be replaced for the start of next half term – these are available to purchase via Arbor at a cost of £1.50.

Please remind your son/daughter that this is a compulsory piece of equipment to help manage their day and remove unnecessary barriers to learning, such as forgetting their timetable or forgetting that a detention has been issued, as well as celebrating attendance streaks and classroom success.

Thank you for your continued support.

Childrens Mental Health Week

This week is Childrens Mental Health Week – YoungMinds want parents/carers to know that there is support out there as you navigate supporting young people with a range of common issues and concerns.

You can contact Young Minds for advice and support online or on the phone via their parents helpline: Link

They also have hundreds of online guides and real stories on their website to support you and know that you are not alone. These cover concerns such as school avoidance, how to talk to your child, anxiety and low mood. Have a look here: Young minds

Apprenticeship Roadshow

As part of ‘National Apprenticeship Week’, Year 11 was visited this week by the ‘Apprenticeship Roadshow'. This event aimed to amplify students' knowledge around apprenticeships and showcase the variety of apprenticeships available to young people on the Isle of Wight as well as support them to prepare for their next best steps in education and training.

The roadshow allowed students the opportunity to talk to current apprentices and industry experts from across the South in sectors including business support, digital technology, transport and logistics, Healthcare, Education, engineering, construction and hospitality. Year 11 feedback was incredibly positive, with many students commenting on how helpful it was to speak face to face with those who have been through both the application process as well as currently training.

Thank you goes to Solent Careers Hub for facilitating the event.
