Weekly Updates from the Leadership Team

Welcome to our second Newsletter of this term. What a week it has been at Medina College! We have had so much to celebrate, with countless opportunities for our students to live out our school values in the real world.

We were recently honoured with an extraordinary opportunity to join Artswork’s Young Cultural Changemakers programme. This initiative is part of the youth-led film festival, LISTEN UP!, providing a vital platform for young people on the Isle of Wight to speak on issues that truly matter to them. Our students were posed a single, powerful question: “If adults were listening, what would you tell them?” From there, they became the driving force behind every aspect of the filmmaking process. Working alongside professional director Bruce Webb, our students developed the core themes and chose the genre, interviewed and selected the director, co-wrote the script and acted in the film. Operated cameras, managed sound, and composed the original score! On Tuesday, we held a special preview for parents, carers, and distinguished guests, including the High Sheriff, Nigel Hartley, and Ashley Whittaker, Strategic Director of Children's Services. We are incredibly proud of our students' honesty, dedication, and bravery. They perfectly embodied our values of ambition, courage, confidence, and kindness. Keep an eye out – we will share a link to the film very soon!

Huge congratulations to our Active Travel Ambassadors (ATA) team! Today, our students successfully pitched their campaign at the "Campaign Junction" event in the Theatre. We are thrilled to announce that they secured £500 in Modeshift funding to bring their travel initiatives to life. It was a professional, persuasive, and passionate performance.

Yesterday and today, the amazing Mr. Rock took on the gruelling challenge of walking 100 miles around the Medina College fields, starting at 4am yesterday and finishing this afternoon, having walked through the night. Every year group had the chance to walk alongside him yesterday, and the atmosphere was fantastic as we watched him cross the finish line this afternoon. This event even welcomed students from other Island schools to support Mr. Rock as he raises vital funds for Huntington’s Disease. He has truly lived and breathed ambition, courage, and resilience. Please take a moment to read the full report and consider supporting Mr. Rock’s fundraising efforts if you are able.

There will be full details of all our reports to follow for you to enjoy next week.

Please remember that it is Bank Holiday Monday, so we look forward to welcoming students back to school on Tuesday. Year 11 sees the start of their exam season next week, with the first whole cohort exam being the week after. A letter will be shared covering how the school day will be affected as well as final pieces of important information.

Wishing you all a wonderful, restful long weekend!

Mr Rock's 100 – an unforgettable moment for our school community!

Today, we witnessed something truly extraordinary as Mr Rock completed his 100 challenge – a non-stop 100 mile walk around our school fields.  Students joined Mr Rock across the two days of the challenge; it was an extremely emotional moment as the whole school then came out to cheer him on as he crossed the finish line this afternoon.
Taking on this challenge to raise funds for the Huntington's Disease Association, Mr Rock has shown incredible strength, determination and courage. We couldn't be any more proud of him! An absolute inspiration to us all.

We'll share more next week, but for now, thank you Mr Rock for showing us all what resilience really looks like.
If you haven't yet made your mufti day donation, Arbor will remain open over the weekend for you to do so. You can also support via the Just Giving page.

Medina Mekanix - First Tech Robotics challenge

'We are The Medina Mekanix!  We are a group of students from years 8 and 9 who are taking part in the First Tech Robotics challenge. This is to build and program a robot that will shoot balls into a basketball-style goal. There is a competition with all Island secondary schools that will run in June. We would very much like to raise money to purchase some team T-shirts and an electric screwdriver so we can build the robot and make changes more quickly.  Also, some electronic sensors, so hopefully we can get ahead of our competition!

We would really appreciate any donation, no matter how large or small.

This can be done directly through your Arbor account or by using the QR code below.

Many thanks

Team Medina Mekanix!

Our Developing Agriculture Area

Last summer we made a grant application to WightAID to support us in planting an orchard, which was successful! Our vision is to help feed our families and our local community whilst supporting the wellbeing of our students and teaching them how to grow their own food. The trees have recently arrived and been planted in our agricultural area!

Furthermore, we have today taken delivery of two chicken coops! These have been generously donated by Rob and Mel from High Bank Farm in Newchurch, and Gareth Ely from Mersley Gardens AP in Newchurch, who also transported them to us. We are now on the hunt for any parent/grandparent, handy men or women who may be willing to help us renovate the coops and build a large run around them. If you can help us with this, please get in contact with Mrs Drake, SENDCo. Please email: info@medina.iow.sch.uk and mark for her attention.

Well done Jacob and Oscar!

A huge well done to Jacob and Oscar in 8A on receiving a ‘Certificate of Appreciation’ from the Mayor of East Cowes. Over the weekend, the boys spent their Saturday voluntarily litter picking along East Cowes seafront. This act of kindness was recognised by members of the public, resulting in a certificate of appreciation being presented to the boys on behalf of East Cowes Town Council and the community of East Cowes.

Well done Jacob and Oscar! We are very proud of you for helping to support the local community and setting a great example to others.
