Weekly Updates from the Headteacher

We have had another busy week here in school with assemblies delivered by our local charity, Mountbatten, various sporting fixtures, both home and away and also a meeting with various local professionals about some potential new ways of supporting our students. A team of our Year 9 pupils won an area STEM competition hosted by the University of Southampton and are now through to the national finals in Aberdeen in June.

Yesterday we held our 'Trial results day' for our Year 11 students. This is always an important event for them, as it gives them a little bit of the flavour of what it will feel like in August, the difference being that now they still have time to alter their result! We have Easter Revision sessions running in a variety of subjects over the two weeks of break, further details will be shared next week.

Next week we have our Easter Fayre at The Island VI Form on Thursday, 3 April between 3.15 and 5.00pm, raising money for our World Challenge Eswatini & Mozambique trip which is taking place in 2026.

We will be holding a Year 10 Parents' Evening here in school on Wednesday, 23 April, the first week back after the Easter break. The booking system is open for this, so if you have not yet booked your appointment please do via the Arbor App. This evening will be important as it will indicate the progress that your child is currently making, and whether there are any particular areas which could help improve their outcomes. Developing new ways of working and new habits can often accelerate progress.

As a reminder, next Friday, 4 April, students will be finishing at 12.35pm. For any students entitled to Free School Meals, there will be a meal deal available from the canteen during the morning break.

I hope you have a lovely weekend and, of course, don't forget that the clocks 'spring' forward.

Some of our students will be taking part in a once-in-a-lifetime World Challenge trip to Eswatini and Mozambique in 2026! They are currently fundraising towards this amazing experience and have organised an Easter Fayre at The Island VI Form on 3 April.

Some amazing stalls have been organised and lots of fun activities for all ages! All are welcome - please come along and support!

Global Underwater Hub STEM Challenge - Regional Winners!

A team of 6 Year 9 students designed, tested, marketed and presented an autonomous remotely operated vehicle to combat plastic pollution in our waters.

They were up against nine other schools from across the South Coast and have won this round - advancing to the National finals in Aberdeen in June!

The competition is run by Global Underwater Hub and sponsored by Saab, who also helped judge along with the Royal Navy.

Well done to Zoe, Amelie, Isabelle, Michael, Dominic and Joseph and good luck for the next stage of the competition!

Riley’s Chess Success

Well done to Year 8 student, Riley, on his most recent chess success. He took part in a Chess Simul with Grandmaster Michael Adams (7-time British champion and peak world ranking #4!) last weekend.

Riley ended up being the last man standing out of 20 with 72 moves against him. This is an incredible achievement and put him in the top 3 strongest opponents on the day - along with a National Master who plays for Wales.

Riley clearly has a very bright future ahead in the world of chess!

Staff V Student Dodgeball

Well done to the staff and students who played dodgeball at lunchtime yesterday to raise money for the Year 11 Prom! £40 has been added to the fundraising.

Special mentions to Aaron, Billy and Fergus who got some good hits in. Well done Miss Hulford-Funnell for staying in the game and, Mr Rock, for dodging and jumping like a gazelle!

Don't forget that on Thursday next week (3 April), there will be a staff v student bleep test taking place! Come along and support - £1 entry fee being donated to the Year 11 Prom fundraising.

Walk the Wight Assembly

Wednesday this week saw Mountbatten Hospice join us to present special assemblies and inform years 7 - 10 about their important fundraising work alongside plans for the 2025 'Walk the Wight'.

This year's walk is scheduled for 11 May and many students were enthused by the prospect of completing the 4 mile schools walk from Freshwater Bay to Alum Bay. Olivia from Mounbatten was incredibly impressed by the mature and well-behaved year groups and thanked us for being the only Island Secondary school to invite the Charity to present.

Here is the link to sign up for schools Walk the Wight this year.
