Year 6 Transition
The move up to Secondary School is huge; there’s no doubt about it. Not just for the student themselves but for their families too. However, we want to reassure you that as soon as your place is confirmed here at Medina College, we are here to support you every step of the way. We work closely with the primary schools to ensure a smooth handover and that we get to know your child prior to their arrival in September, so we can really hit the ground running.
We welcome the opportunity to speak with parents and carers to answer any questions they have. Parents are welcome to contact the school to arrange a telephone call with Mr Tennant, our Transition Co-ordinator.
We visit primary schools in the summer term to meet each and every student, not just to welcome them but to also answer any questions they may have. The aim is to soothe any anxieties they may have and to share the excitement of joining our wonderful community.
An Admissions booklet and Getting to know our students booklet will be sent out to Year 6 parents at the start of the summer term and the completed forms should be returned to school in the prepaid envelope, as soon as possible.

Transition Evening - Monday 7 July 2025 (parents/carers only)
Parents of new Year 7 starters are invited to learn more about Medina College and the arrangements for their child in September. Please enter the school by the main entrance and make your way to the Dining Hall. There will be an opportunity to meet your child's Head of Year and Tutor and learn about the school day, Arbor, safeguarding and clubs.
Transition Day - Tuesday 8 July 2025
Arriving between 8.30 - 8.45 am and leaving at 3.15 pm - new students only.
All new year 7 students are invited to attend our Transition Day. This day at Medina College gives our new students a taster of what to expect: a variety of lessons, meeting tutors, moving around school, meeting new friends and teachers and having school lunch. They will have an enjoyable day and go home with a variety of work and experiences.
Throughout the day, they will be with their new tutor group and are accompanied by some of our student ambassadors and their tutor. When they return to us in September as year 7 students, they will be returning to friendly faces who they will recognise and to a school that they are starting to feel familiar with.
On the day, please drop off and collect your child at the main entrance where they will be greeted by their tutor, head of year, myself and the Senior Leadership Team. They will need to bring writing equipment and come in their primary school PE kit.
Student ambassadors will show them around the school and explain to them what being a student at Medina College involves.
For lunch, students will either need to bring a packed lunch or they can purchase a hot/cold meal from the canteen with cash. If your child receives free school meals, this will be accounted for and provided. Should your child have special dietary requirements or would prefer a packed lunch, please ensure this is brought with them on the day. Your child should also bring something to eat and drink for breaktime or, again, snacks will be available for them to purchase in the canteen.
Your first day and first lessons at Medina
When you arrive for your first day at Medina in September (8.35 am start), you should come in your uniform and arrive at the front of school. Breakfast is available, free of charge, from 8.15 am everyday. There will only be two year groups in school on that first day, so you will have a good opportunity to get to know the school and find your feet.
You will not have any lessons on the first day, but will spend some time in your tutor base with your tutor receiving your timetable. There will be lots of activities during the day and to help you become familiar with the school and your new friends. You will finish the day at 3.15 pm.
What You Need on Your First Day
● PE kit
● Make sure you have money to pay for your lunch on your Arbor account or a packed lunch
● A drink and a snack for break time or money on your Arbor account to buy a drink and snack if you wish.
● You will need a school bag to carry home any books and equipment you will receive on the day
● You will need your pencil case and pens.
Remember, you have done lots of preparation to come to Medina and most of you have had the chance to meet new friends and tutors already, so a lot of things will feel familiar. Some things are bound to feel a little strange at first, but that won’t last for long. Remember, everyone is having their first day so do your best to help each other to feel happy and comfortable together.
