Weekly Updates from the Headteacher

This week, Year 7 Parents/Carers will have received an invite to Parents' Evening on Wednesday 11 June. Please do take this opportunity to book appointments to talk to subject teachers about how your child has settled into Medina College, the progress they have made and areas which they can focus on and develop. If you have any problems booking appointments, please contact the year office. Our Year 7 and 8 pupils will be involved in subject assessments this week to end this half term.

Year 11 has had a busy week with the first set of core exams now complete. The breakfast that has been on offer before morning exams for Year 11 has been popular. If your child has not yet taken advantage of this, please encourage them to. It is a great way to start the day and gives them the opportunity to discuss last minute tips and final questions with their subject teachers, in an informal and relaxed environment. We will be sharing the half term revision sessions with you at the start of next week.

Mr Winsor and the Creative Arts team held auditions this week for our 'Musical in a Week' which is taking place in July. This promises to be a heartwarming production, giving the students the opportunity to shine in various creative disciplines. We are very much looking forward to seeing the fruits of their labour.

This week has been and continues for the weekend to be mental health awareness week. Talking about mental health might feel hard, but reaching out to someone who’s struggling can really help them. It shows them they’re not alone and that you care.

I will be writing to you at the start of next week about the upcoming IW Festival and the logistical information to be aware of.

I would also like to acknowledge the hard work and dedication our students have shown in their studies and in embracing The Medina Way during this half term. Please see the letter that contains details of expectations on uniform and the use of phones for next half term.

Well done to everyone who took part in any part of Walk the Wight last week. I hope you enjoy a slightly more restful Sunday this weekend.

Rowing Success

Huge congratulations to Year 8 student, Alex and Year 10 student, Rose, on their recent rowing success representing Shanklin Rowing Club.

Competing against 40 other clubs from around the country, they took part in the Ball Cup at Eton Dorney Rowing Club last weekend, where the 2012 Olympic Rowing was hosted.

Rose took part in 3 categories: the J14 double, J15 double, and J15 single scull...her first time competing in a single. She won silver medals for both of the doubles, and came 4th in the single, which was amazing for her first go.

Alex took part in 2 categories: the J13 double, and the J14 double. He won gold in the J13, and came 4th in the J14. This was particularly amazing for him, as it was his first competition!

It is always wonderful to see students showing dedication and commitment to their sports and reaping the rewards of their hard work. Well done to Alex and Rose.

Athletics Success

Last Thursday, Mr Rock and Miss Caddick had the pleasure of taking Year 9 and 10 athletes to the Island Schools Junior Athletics Championships. The students were fantastic all afternoon and did the school proud. We had some good results from the team. Mylea achieved silver in the javelin, Amelia bronze in the shot put and Sonya bronze in the 300m.

Great work Team Medina!

Thai Farewell

Last Friday, the Medina buddies went to the Thai students' farewell meal at The Isle of Wight College. They were treated to traditional Thai food, some Thai dancing and a traditional Thai story.

As always, it has been an amazing experience for our students to buddy with these young people who have been in the UK for 7 weeks. Many of our students who have been buddies in previous years are still in contact with their Thai friends.

Walk the Wight 2025

Walk The Wight for Mountbatten Isle of Wight took place on Sunday 11 May and #TeamMedina was out in force! Well done to everyone in our community who took on either the 4 miles, half route or full 26.5 miles - you are all amazing!  Seeing all of these photos of our students, staff and families enjoying the beautiful Isle of Wight scenery, whilst raising funds for such an important cause, has filled us with pride!

Mr Rock Vs The Ascent for the Huntington's Disease Association

Mr Rock is at it again! After the huge success of his charity walk last year around the island non-stop, he is now facing an even bigger challenge. This year he is trying to walk uphill to a height of 9000m (which is higher than Mount Everest) by walking up Bonchurch Down 38 times. To put this into context, the average UK stairwell has 13 steps in it. If you wanted to do his challenge on that one set, you would have to walk up them 2214 times!!!! He is again doing it all in one go, starting on 7 June and going through until he has completed it. We all think he's nuts, but it is for a great charity, The Huntington's Disease Association, which is personally important for him as he has the condition. He is again hoping to raise awareness of the condition, while making money for the HDA who support families like his who struggle with the disease.  He also hopes to inspire people as to what you can complete when you set your mind to it. We wish him all the luck in the world.

If you would like to sponsor him, please click here or scan the QR code to go to his Just Giving page. Any amount you can give makes a huge difference to families impacted by this cruel condition.
